Lately I’ve had a lot of questions directed to me along the lines of how do you get to the life you want to live.
This is a complex question, and one that I can only comment on from my perspective.
As a child, I didn’t question that I wanted to be a musician. It was my world. I didn’t know it was the world I wanted – I just assumed it was mine to enjoy.
It wasn’t until I was in my late twenties that the plan started to fail for me. Every indicator was telling me I had to stop. My life’s instances became so unsettling it seemed perfectly clear that I was on the wrong path. So I became still, and I became settled in the idea that I would give it up.
That was over ten years ago.
Here’s what I realize now:
Ten years ago I had the same musical talent and passion as I possess today. What is different today is, and this I owe to the deviation from my ‘chosen’ path, what is different today is I have PERSPECTIVE.
For my entire life I’ve been looking in, living on the outer perimeter of how most people live. Living a freely artistic life is a privilege. It can also leave you sadly lacking in empathy for the people around you. When you aren’t faced with the myriad choices and pressures most people have to navigate through every day, you can’t possibly understand the stress people are under.
Today I have a greater understanding of the world, a greater understanding of people and a greater appreciation for the challenge of life.
Had I stayed on the path I was on, I may have just burned out entirely in the music industry and it would have eventually just disappeared from my life for good.
So how do you attain the life you want? Listen to all of the guiding messages that are trying to get through to you. If you’re pursuing a dream and you are constantly being knocked off the mountain, it doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t have that dream. It may just mean you’ve taken the wrong path up the mountain. Sometimes you need to go right back to the bottom and find another way up. Look for the signs.

Life is a journey, enjoy every step and don’t be afraid to stop and ask for directions.
